Types of Frisbee Golf Discs
Disc manufactures make several different types of golf frisbees. Depending on the particular shot you are approaching, and your throwing style, you will want several frisbees, encompassing the different different types of golf discs and the way they behave when you throw them.
Distance Drivers - Distance Drivers are made to go fast and far. They typically have thick rims (wing length) and sharp pointy edges. In order to get more distance by throwing distant drivers, you must be able to get a solid snap on your release. Maximum distance drivers are generally over-stable, meaning they will fade in the direction the disc is spinning (to the left for right handed drivers throwing backhand).
Fairway Drivers - Fairway Drivers are also made to go the distance. These discs travel at slower speeds than distance drivers and have more narrow rims, which are usually easier to grip for beginners. Fairway drivers generally fly straighter and have less fade at the end of their flights. For newer players, fairway drivers will travel just as far as distance drivers. If you’re just getting into frisbee golf, don’t get excited about the “maximum distance drivers.” Until you can throw more than about 300 feet, fairway drivers will be at least as, if not more effective.
Mid Range Discs – Mid range frisbees usually have rounded edges, and don’t fly as far as drivers. Some mid range discs can fly perfectly straight, and are designed to give you accurate throws. If you’re new to disc golf, you don’t need to buy more than about one mid range frisbee. Most mid range discs exist because they were the furthest flying golf frisbees before the techonology really advanced giving us maximum distance. Every new disc golfer ought to have at least one straight flying mid range disc in their bag.
Approach Discs – An approach disc is a low speed disc used to get you near the basket. These discs aren’t made to go long distance, but are made to give you maximum control. Some mid range discs and some putters are used as approach discs. The important attribute to have in an approach disc is one that will land and stay near the basket giving you a make able putt.
Putters – The putter is the frisbee you’re going to throw into the basket. Most putters are low speed discs that fly very straight. These discs have rounded edges and are made for accurate flights and chain gripping abilities. Having a good putter, and being able to make it land in the basket is probably the most valuable thing you can do to lower your frisbee golf score.
